The Buzz About Hemp Seed Oil
It seems every other week there is a new "miracle" skincare product guaranteed to fight aging, cure acne and pay your mortgage off early. I can't guarantee any of those things here. Literally. I've been informed by our legal department that if I make those claims, I'm on my own. What I can tell you about is some pretty fantastic new research coming out about hemp seed oil and the benefits it can have in skincare.
Not All Oils Are Created Equal
Hemp seed oil is generally cold-pressed and has a greenish tint. Not to be confused with CBD oil which comes from the leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant, hemp seed oil comes from, well, the seeds and contains limited or no THC and CBD, the psychoactive compounds traditionally found in cannabis.
Hemp seed oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn't clog pores like some other oils. This makes it a fantastic moisturizer for most skin types. It's high in Omega 3, 6 & 9 acids which all can help heal the skin's barrier and lock in moisture as well as being a moisture-attracting humectant.
Itl also contains the powerful anti-inflammatory gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This omega 6 fatty acid helps calm redness and irritation and encourages new skin cell generation. Which is great news for those who suffer from skin inflammation.
Best Ways to Use Hemp Seed Oil
A fantastic way to see the benefits of hemp seed oil in your skin is to add it to your diet. It's rich in nutrients and has a slightly nutty flavour. You can swap it out for olive oil in salad dressings or sprinkle whole hemp seeds directly onto your salads or smoothies for some added crunch. Just don't cook with it. It's highly volatile and should be kept refrigerated.
