Breakthrough Patent Filed: Preventing Lead Contamination in Hemp-Derived CBD

CALGARY, Canada, October 26, 2020- Canadian Greenfield Technologies Corp. (CGT) is proud to announce that after extensive research, CGT has filed a Patent Application for "Process for Controlling Lead & Other Heavy Metals in Plant Extracts".

The technology, which took considerable developmental work and involved outside experts, immobilizes the metals in the extraction feedstock at a molecular level, prior to the extraction step. This immobilization prevents the leachability of heavy metals into extracts, such as cannabidiol (CBD), during the extraction process.  The developed technology was thoroughly verified on hemp feedstock contaminated with lead and used for ethanol-based CBD extraction. All testing for lead content in “before” and “after” extracts was performed by independent accredited laboratories. The technological principle of the invention is specialized electromagnetic pre-treatment of the feedstock prior to extraction. The developed technology does not utilize any reagents.

CBD extracted from hemp becomes the preferred, and often only, practical option for economical CBD production. However, the concern is becoming acute with excessive heavy metal content in CBD derived from hemp grown in soils containing metals as hemp is a well-known “metal accumulator”.  Lead is one of, if not the most, significant and prevalent environmental contaminant of concern to human health. Cases have already come to light with excessive heavy metal content in CBD.

The developed technology (named “Phyto-Met Locker”) is the solution to the above problem. CGT is planning development the Phyto-Met Locker processing equipment, allowing the growth of CGT’s business lines related to advanced hemp processing in addition to the current, successfully commercialized HempTrain™ process lines.

About the HempTrain™ Advanced Processing Plant
The HempTrain™ Advanced Processing Plant is the only hemp processing technology capable of separating whole-plant hemp feedstock into all high-value components. A HempTrain™ can separate dry hemp feedstock into long, strong bast fiber, clean, size-specified hurd, and a nutrient rich green microfiber. Furthermore, it can process fresh/green hemp feedstock, separating and concentrating a high-CBD fraction for use as an extraction feedstock.
